Jones tips tough race in marathon twilight event tonight
RHYS Jones has his eyes on the prize.
Champion solo Rockhampton mountain bike rider Jones is hoping to finish his 2013 MTB season with a bang tonight as he tears up the track at Seeonee Park.
Jones will go head-to-head with riders from across Central Queensland in Rockhampton Mountain Bike Club's four-hour day/twilight cross country race.
After a successful year in the saddle, including top honours in the sports class of the Rocky MTB five-round series, Jones said he would give it his all.
"I don't have really high expectations but I have been training a fair bit so I'd like to do pretty well," Jones said.
"I'm riding solo, you can ride in a team or solo, so I'll be by myself for the four hours and while four hours is a long time to be putting around, I'm hoping to finish at the top end of the field. You just have to put your head down, not think about it too much, and get in the zone and ride."
Jones was expecting some hard-hitting competition though, with fellow solo rider Ben Ruhle in form for the race.
"There will be a couple of guys up there in my race," Jones said.
"Ben is always one to look out for.
"He rides a fair bit as well and I think he took out one of the races this year as well so he's definitely up there.
"Ben's my main competitor at the moment but there's people from Gladstone coming up that could make an impact for sure."
Jones said he would be putting in the hard yards over the next few months to prepare for the 2014 season after his sports class win pushed him up into the elite division.
