Josh and Elyse hit a new high with perfect 'hygge' kitchen

JASON and Sarah have successfully avoided being booted off The Block.

In a miraculous turnaround during their 'double whammy' week, the embattled couple managed to deliver their master bedroom and en-suite, which they failed to complete last week, and their kitchen.

To top things off, they finished runners-up to Josh and Elyse with their sleek, modern kitchen.

Young guns Josh and Elyse are on a bit of a winning streak after tying with Ronnie and Georgia during living and dining and taking out master bedroom week. Their overall vision for their open-plan living area was praised by the judges for creating a warm, inviting space for socialising that embodies the Danish concept of 'hygge'.

They scored three perfect 10s for their efforts.

"All of the kitchens we've seen today have been beautiful in their own way; this one feels very social," Neale Whitaker said.

"There's a beautiful warmth and sense of community about this kitchen that people are going to find really appealing."

In two clever layout twists, Josh and Elyse changed the orientation of their island bench to face the backyard and by tweaking the stairs to their master bedroom they were able to create a bigger butler's pantry than the other teams.

The realisation of their 'kinfolk' vision has put the couple in real contention to win the renovation show.

"Up until this point in the competition I had Ronnie and Georgia pegged as the front runners for winning The Block, but after today it's these guys," Shaynna Blaze said.

Jason and Sarah are well and truly back in the game with the second best kitchen out of the five houses.

The judges were impressed with their metallic grey cabinets, concrete bench and clever stone shelf behind their cook top.

"It's kind of classic but at the same time the design touches they've put in here make it feel really glamorous and luxurious and modern at the same time," Neale said.

"I feel that this will look as fresh a decade down the track as it does today."

Despite their efforts to source rare Neff appliances, Ronnie and Georgia finished third.

Their grey kitchen with black accents was praised for its style and functionality, but combined with their neutral living and dining areas the space left Shaynna wanting for a bit of colour.

"This feels like the right kitchen for those rendered walls (in the living room)," she said.

"I just feel a little bit cold. When they style it they need to put some accents in this area… it just needs a bit of a lift."

The normally detail-oriented couple also lost marks for the second week in a row for a lack of power points.

"You've got six different appliances (in the butler's pantry) and you've got one double power point there," Darren Palmer said.

Best mates Sticks and Wombat, who are yet to win a room, finished in fourth place. The judges were torn on their combination of grey cabinets and grey marble-look stone but loved their wooden breakfast bar.

"They've got this signature love of timber," Neale said. "They seem to know how to bring it into a contemporary context, which is really clever. It's raw luxury - that's what the boys are doing so well."

Queenslanders Hannah and Clint finished last after an earlier planning mistake forced them to install a fridge that was too small for a family home.

"Straight away I'm looking at the styling; this is amazing. It really makes you feel like you're in this beautiful, inviting kitchen," Shaynna said.

"But the small fridge, the cocktail area (rather than a study nook) and this bar fridge are really overshadowing how I feel about this kitchen."

This upcoming week the teams will work on their hallways and laundries.
