New Zealander sets new course record at Rocky Pro Am

NEW Zealander Josh Geary set a new course record yesterday on his way to the top of the leaderboard after the opening round of the $50,000 Ian Weigh Toyota Rockhampton Pro-Am.

Former US Players Amateur Championship winner Daniel Nisbet started on the Rockhampton Golf Club's picturesque back nine and carded an eight-under 64 to finish one shot behind Geary (63) and two shots in front of Pieter Zwart (66).

Geary, who also started on the back nine, finished with 10 birdies, with his only blemish coming at the long par-four sixth hole.

The sun seems to be shining on Geary, who joined the Queensland Sunshine Tour to avoid the dreary weather at home in New Zealand.

In red-hot form, Geary claimed his first victory on the tour at the City of Mackay Open last week.

1ST RD LEADERBOARD

- 9Josh Geary (63)

- 8Daniel Nisbet (64)

- 6Pieter Zwart, Callan O'Reilly, Troy Cox (66)

- 5Jared Pender, Benjamin Clementson (67)

- 4Chris Gaunt, Scott Laycock, Adam Blyth, Paul Hayden, Sean Riordan (68)

"It is a great feeling to be in the current form that I am in and I am definitely going to ride this wave for as long as I can," Geary said after yesterday's round.

"I really enjoyed my round today with Callan, who incidentally pushed me all the way with his own round of 66. Hopefully we can do it all again tomorrow and make the most of the early conditions."

Nisbet set a new course record in the morning's round before Geary broke it later in the afternoon.

After a hugely successful amateur career, Nisbet has spent recent years trying to carve out a career in the professional ranks.

Nisbet landed three birdies and an eagle on the par-five 16th in his first nine holes before finishing with four birdies and a single bogey on the back nine.

Yeppoon golfer Adam Blyth shot a 68 to finish the opening round on four-under to be tied in eighth spot while Rockhampton Golf Club assistant professional Jeff Hoy will be looking to bounce back in today's second round after shooting a five-over 77.

Round two gets underway today at 6.50am, with Josh Geary teeing off at 7.20am.
