Jumbo's surprise stopover

PLANESPOTTERS lucky enough to be at Rockhampton Airport yesterday morning enjoyed the rare treat of seeing a Jumbo jet.

The Qantas Boeing 747 was diverted to the city en route from Los Angeles when thick fog blanketed Brisbane International.

It was unable to land at its intended destination and put down for an unscheduled stop in the Beef Capital at 6.30am.

It spent nearly two hours at the council-owned airport, where it refuelled before getting the all-clear to continue its journey to Brisbane.

And the passengers remained on the aircraft the whole time.

Cr Graeme Brady, who chairs Rockhampton Regional Council's business enterprise committee, said staff had been called in an hour early.

“An increased number of fire service staff also needed to be called in to increase response capacity for this type of aircraft,” he said.
