Kate Jones 'running scared': Newman

VOTERS in Queensland's key political battleground of Ashgrove believe Kate Jones is "running scared" from her high-profile political opponent Liberal National Party leader Campbell Newman.

Ms Jones yesterday announced she would step down as Environment Minister in an attempt to thwart the political ambitions of the former Brisbane lord mayor.

Speaking at a school fete yesterday, Ms Jones declared the gloves were now off in the battle against premier contender Mr Newman for the inner-Brisbane seat of Ashgrove.

"I am determined to put up a good, clean and honest fight and hope all involved will do likewise."
