Keeping the food scene fresh in CQ

BUSINESSES in Rockhampton have faced tough times lately so Ross Cannell thought it was time to reinvigorate local food hubs.

The Comcater sales manager decided to put a group of food equipment suppliers together from Brisbane to travel to Rockhampton in hopes of updating cafes with the latest food technology.

"What we found is business in Rockhampton has been slow lately so what we've decided to do is try and come to the people to save them coming to us," Ross said.

"We know it's hard for people and times are tough so we've decided to bring the equipment to the people and hopefully that will sort of encourage things and get the momentum going."

The expo, which was in town last week, was the first of it's kind for Rocky and Ross hopes to continue it next year.

"This is the first time we've tried something like this in Rockhampton, we normally travel as individuals, so we might travel as a company but at this event we had eight companies that were here," he said.

"We thought the best way to get a number of people into the one venue is to have so many different products.

"Hopefully somebody walks away with an idea that will help them grow their business."

Having been in the game for seven years, Ross has had the chance to supply to a number of people including restaurants, hotels, pubs, hospitals and cafes.

"The people who have come have been serious punters, they've been serious about setting up new cafes, purchasing new equipment and moving on from there."

"The mining industry has died slowly but I hope to think there's other industries up here and hopefully tourism is one of those industries as well because there are some great restaurant and we are in the beef capital of the world so hopefully we just keep growing the industry and keep helping it thrive."

Ross said he loved being in the industry because he loved putting smiles on peoples faces through food.

"It's the fact that we easily put a smile on someone's face, it's amazing what food does."

"It's not all about the equipment, it's to show people how they could save and make money.

"For all of us it's great that we can give business owners some sort of idea to grow their business."
