66-year-old continues to mow down the field of racers
KEN Booy is proof age is no barrier when it comes to playing sport and having fun.
The 66-year-old Rockhampton ride-on lawn mower racer found himself on the podium for the second time in as many months after pushing it to the limit in round four of the Queensland Ride-On Mower Racing Championships at Yaamba over the weekend.
After winning three of the six A-grade heats astride his newly modified Rover Rancher with a 28HP (810cc) V-Twin Briggs and Stratton engine revving to more than 7000rpm, Booy took home top honours ahead of Bundaberg racer Andy Watson and Dave Andrews from Yaamba.
The experienced racer, who won the last Central Queensland round in October last year, said he was over the moon.
"I'm rapt to get back-to-back wins in the state titles and looking forward to the next round," said Booy.
"It was an awesome day with some really tough competition pushing me to the limit."
Booy gave praise to local 2013 Australian Off Road Trophy Truck champion Bill Geddes who made his mower racing debut in A-grade.
"Bill showcased his seasoned driving skills with some around the outside overtaking manoeuvres through the sweeper," he said.
"We've never seen anyone qualify in A-grade first time out on a racing mower.
"It's great to have someone of his calibre entering the sport and he is going to be stiff competition and a top contender."
CQMRC official Dave Andrews said the event went off without a hitch and attracted huge crowds.
"We were extremely happy with the turnout on Sunday with well over 500 spectators packing the venue," Andrews said.
"We moved the pit area this year so that we could expand the spectator area to accommodate more people.
"As the sport is growing at such an alarming rate, we'll have to expand it even more before the next meeting.
"It's probably due to it being such an affordable fun sport which is family orientated."
