Kenny keen not to succumb to old age in title hunt
EMERALD cowboy Shane Kenny is aiming to rope in a title buckle in a fifth Australian Professional Rodeo Association category tomorrow night.
Kenny will be in action in the team roping event at The M Group Friday Night rodeo at the Emerald Showgrounds which attracted 243 nominations in eight events.
Emerald rider Clayton Braden won both rounds and the final of the second division saddle bronc ride at the 2013 Mt Isa Rodeo and will compete in the event against a field including former Emerald and now Gracemere rider Brendan Breiner.
Capella local Guy Ford will be one of the favourites for the bull ride after coming third in round 1 at Mt Isa with a score of 82.
Kenny has won 31 titles in the APRA since 1991, 14 all around, 12 in the rope and tie, three in steer wrestling and two team roping heeler titles, and now has his sights on a top-15 berth in the team roping header standings to qualify for the National Finals Rodeo.
"I am keen to win a header title after being runner-up twice but it gets harder as you get older," Kenny said.
He will form one team with fellow Emerald roper Clancy Middleton and another with Springsure cowboy Brendan Kenny.
He'll have some stiff competition, with the top eight ranked APRA rope and tie cowboys all nominating.
Kenny heads the standings from young gun Grant Hanrahan and Alton Downs rider Shane Iker.
Iker leads this season's steer wrestling and all around standings in the APRA. Twenty-four year old Hanrahan will compete in the rope and tie, and team roping.
In cowgirl events, there are 31 riders in the barrel race and 27 in breakaway roping.
Several including Emerald trio Leanne Kenny, Leanne Caban and Tenielle Middleton, and Alton Downs rider Jorja Watkins have nominated in both events.
Action starts at 5.30pm.
