Keppel Kraken water play area could open mid-December
CHRISTMAS has come early for the Livingstone Shire in the form of... The Keppel Kraken.
It was announced in yesterday's Livingstone council meeting that Yeppoon's zero depth water play area could be opened to the public as soon as December 13.
Mayor Bill Ludwig said December 13 had been the confirmed date for the official opening of the water play area but that construction delays could set the opening back a week.
"We were hoping for the 13th and they're working away to try to reach that timeframe but we don't want to rush it," Cr Ludwig said.
"Obviously, if it can be opened by the 13th that would be great but if not the community will still get a preview of it even if some of the final landscaping elements aren't finished. If the play area is not officially opened on the 13th it will be ready by the 20th and definitely operational in time for Christmas."
Cr Ludwig said although it had been a long wait for the community, it was going to be the best Christmas present of the year.
"We've been told by the designers that this will be one of the best water play areas in Australia," Cr Ludwig said. "The hydraulic designers said it would be one of the flagships of water play features and that's what we always wanted to deliver, a world-class waterfront development that will be a signature to our region.
"When people see the works that have been delivered with such artistic style it's really going to have a wow factor. There are another five art elements to arrive including a 2m mud crab, starfish, stingray and two turtles done in that same glass mosaic finish as the other sea creatures."
