Kershaw Gardens rapist pleads guilty

A 30-year-old man, who raped two women in random, violent attacks in Rockhampton last year, will be sentenced today at 2.30pm.

Raymond Leslie Haynes raped a 19-year-old in Kershaw Gardens on January 16, 2008 and a 31-year-old woman in a toilet cubical at the Cambridge Hotel on April 24, 2008.

Both attacks were unprovoked and violent in nature.

Crown prosecutor Julie Marsden said Haynes did not know the women and “preyed on their vulnerability”.

The former junior cricket star pleaded guilty this morning in the Rockhampton District Court to three counts of rape, deprivation of liberty and sexual assault.

Read tomorrow’s Morning Bulletin for sentencing details and more background on the shocking crimes.
