Kevin Rudd hands in his resignation, officially this time

FORMER Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has officially handed in his resignation from the parliament.

A statement from Speaker Bronwyn Bishop's office confirmed the Member for Griffith officially resigned on Friday.

While widely expected not to complete the current term of the parliament Mr Rudd's resignation speech last Wednesday came as a shock to many.

Mr Rudd has now opened then door for a by-election in the inner-Brisbane seat, with Mrs Bishop yet to confirm a date.

It comes only days after his challenger at the September election, Bill Glasson, was officially endorsed by the LNP to run.

Dr Glasson, a former head of the Australian Medical Association, had whittled Mr Rudd's 58% two-party preferred margin from the 2010 election down to just 53% at the September 7 poll.
