Kidnapped Aussie in ransom video

KIDNAPPED Australian adventurer Warren Rodwell has pleaded for his life in a video sent to his Filipino wife, saying his captors are demanding a $US2 million ransom.

In the video obtained by the Sydney Morning Herald a distressed-looking Mr Rodwell pleads for Australian and Philippine authorities to ensure he is released from a terrorist kidnap gang in the southern Philippines. ''To my family please do whatever to raise the two million US dollars they are asking for my release as soon as possible,'' he says.

The video of less than two minutes was sent by the kidnappers shortly before Christmas. He also talks about being a former soldier and how the terrain where he is being held on Basilan island is different from where he was trained.

''To the Australian embassy here in the Philippines, this is your constituent appealing for his life and safety … If I'm given my last wish, my last wish is to please help me out of here alive please Madame Ambassador.''

The Herald has also obtained four photos of Mr Rodwell that were sent to his wife, Miraflor Gutang, 27, as proof he is alive. They show the 53-year-old with a wound on his right hand while his left hand is in a handcuff.
