Gallen in doubt for Blackhawks clash after knee injury

ROCKHAMPTON Leagues Club Central Queensland Capras are sweating on the fitness of forward Peter Gallen ahead of their clash with the monster Blackhawks pack.

Gallen had precautionary scans on his left leg yesterday afternoon after jarring his knee in the side's 28-26 loss to Ipswich Jets at Browne Park.

"We were defending in our 20 and I felt it twist but I thought I was right to play on," Gallen said.

"Ten minutes later I was caught underneath a tackle and felt the same thing happen."

The Capras prop hoped he would be right to face the Blackhawks but spent the recovery session receiving treatment from a physiotherapist away from the main playing group.

"I've been doing my research and studying old videos of Neville Costigan who will be a massive threat in the middle of the park," he said. "I've been really looking forward to this game, stepping up and proving my worth amongst three of the toughest front rowers in the comp."

The club yesterday revealed that Gallen "remains in doubt" for this weekend's clash and that he would be "re-assessed throughout the week".

Capras coach Jason Hetherington said the injury was not long-term but rather a build up of fluid and ligament stress.

He said Gerrard Tema was also in doubt recovering from a knee injury.

"We've got a couple of boys on stand-by," Hetherington said.

"Joshy Johnston and Rajan (Opetaia-Halls) will come into the squad but hopefully the other two boys will be fit and healthy for their sakes and ours.

"Joshy had a pre-season down with the dogs (Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs), they have massive wraps on him.

"It's a good opportunity for him to gain a bit more experience."

The Capras will take on Townsville Blackhawks at Jack Manski Oval on Saturday afternoon.
