Knuckle dusters and drugs found in car following crash

WHILE a man was being treated for serious injuries after a two-vehicle crash, police searching his wrecked vehicle discovered knuckle dusters, cannabis and methylamphetamines.

Shawn Andrew Wickham, 32, suffered fractures to his leg and hand and hasn't been able to work since the crash on January 24 because he is still recovering.

Prosecutor Senior Constable Kathy Stafford said police saw there was money spread throughout the vehicle.

Officers found 3.2 g of a white crystal substance believed to be methylamphetamines in a bag hanging inside the vehicle.

There was 1.1 g of cannabis split between two clip-seal bags as well as a pipe, digital scales and clip-seal bags inside two other bags.

Snr Const Stafford said a set of brass knuckle dusters, a category M weapon, were found in the ashtray.

Wickham pleaded guilty in the Mackay Magistrates Court to nine charges including possessing dangerous drugs, utensils and weapons and traffic charges.

Wickham was charged with driving an unregistered vehicle, while his licence was demerit point suspended, on two consecutive days.

He told officers when he was pulled over on May 16 on Celeber Dr he was unaware of the suspension and it was his wife's vehicle, so he didn't know it was unregistered.

However, when he was stopped on May 17 on Oak St in the same vehicle, he said he knew he was demerit point suspended, but was driving because he just wanted to get the car home.

Duty solicitor David Strutynski said Wickham hadn't planned to use the knuckle duster.

It was just a "memento" he'd picked up, .

The court was told it had been eight years since Wickham's last drug offence.

He was fined $2500 and placed on a $350 four-month good behaviour bond.
