Kylie Maybury: The DNA swab that solved 32-year-old crime

AN elderly man has admitted to being behind one of Australia's most baffling crimes, the rape and murder of six-year-old Melbourne girl Kylie Maybury three decades ago.

Kylie was found dead in a gutter the day after her disappearance on Melbourne Cup Day in 1984.

Gregory Keith Davies, 74, this morning pleaded guilty at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court to her rape and murder, on what was to be the first day of his preliminary hearing.

Kylie's mother Julie Maybury broke down as Davies formally admitted to the brutal killing that shocked the nation.

"It's been 33 years and he's put me through hell ... I'm so totally over the moon that he's done it. It just makes life so much easier and all the other victims out there that have lost their children I can understand exactly where they are and where they stand," Mrs Maybury said.

Davies' guilty plea was unexpected, Mrs Maybury said.
