A ROUND of 74 by Yeppoon golfer Matthew Lacey would not have been a bad return in a men's open at the Rockhampton Golf Club never mind an inter-school tournament.

Lacey, representing St Brendan's College, returned the best gross score of the day with his two over the card to win the secondary best gross section during round one of the 2012 Central Queensland Inter-School Golf Challenge.

The teenager went around the course in good company as his group included two of the other rising stars of CQ golf, Sam Broom and Rowan Coombes.

In the girls' event, Kiera King of St Ursula's in Yeppoon won with a round of 84, two shots better than Hannah Edminstone (Tannum Sands State High) and Tory Edmistone (Marist Brothers, Emerald) who finished on 86.

Tyson Smith (Gladstone Toolooa State High ) won the 18-hole secondary school net on 66 while the St Brendan's team of Matthew Lacey, Caine Hendy and Tanner Ward won the secondary teams gross event.

Lachlan Cartwright, Joel Spencer and Tyson Smith of Toolooa State High won the teams net event.

Gladstone St John's Ryan Smith won the 18-hole primary boys' gross on 91, with Brady Ingram of Yeppoon's Sacred Heart winning the 18-hole net event.

Tannum Sands State School team of Heath Atkinson and Tristan Lord won the 18-hole primary school net event.

In the 9-hole competition, it was Ryan Stitt of Calliope State School who was the primary winner of the gross with 49, Sacred Heart's (Yeppoon) Taryn Maher won the girls' event on 56.

Best net went to Steven Muller of Calliope State School on 27 in the boys' event with Yeppoon Sacred Heart's Taylor Ingram for the girls on 31.
