Sunshine Coast transport woes scare off would-be tourists

THE biggest detractor for tourists to the Sunshine Coast is the difficulty to get here.

Sunshine Coast Destination CEO Simon Ambrose said whether it came to getting here by road, rail, or air, the region needed better access.

"Access to the Sunshine Coast is the biggest issue for growing tourism and maintaining tourism levels," he said.

Above all, Mr Ambrose expressed his sadness someone lost their life on the highway at the weekend.

He said the problem with the Bruce Hwy was that for a 50 or so kilometre stretch no alternative route to get off the highway was available.

"We feel there is a very strong case for an additional lane each way, we would like to see it happen as soon as possible.

"The majority of our market is the drive market that uses the Bruce Hwy.

"Tourists and visitors are pretty canny.

They either go later or leave earlier.

"When there is an incident however, people are always going to be impacted."
