Legal groups call for increased funding for free DV services

A QUEENSLAND legal group has called for the Federal Government to increase funding to free legal services that help domestic violence victims.

Speaking on White Ribbon day, Queensland Association of Independent Legal Services director James Farrell said community legal services had to turn away more people than they saw in the 2014-15 year.

"In 2014-15, Queensland's community legal centres provided help to nearly 50,000 Queenslanders, but we were forced to turn away another 80,000. That means three out of five Queenslanders needing our help couldn't speak to a lawyer to address their legal problems," he said.

"As demand for our services is increasing across Queensland, especially in the area of family violence, community legal centres are facing a significant cut to services for people facing legal problems."

Mr Farrell said the Federal Government had cut funding to Queensland community legal centres in July - but welcomed the Minister for Women Michaelia Cash's recent suggestion that the funding may be looked into in a mid-year financial statement.

"The acknowledgment of the cuts is welcome, but the real test is whether the Federal Government will commit to concrete actions that will contribute to ending family violence," he said.
