Leichhardt Hwy reopened between Banana and Wowan after crash

UPDATE 7.25AM:  THE Leichhardt Highway between Banana and Wowan has reopened to all vehicles following a traffic accident yesterday afternoon.

UPDATE 7.15PM: A ROAD train carting a load of ammonium nitrate rolled over on the Leichhardt Highway, 20km north of Banana this afternoon.

The accident happened at 12.42pm on Thursday.

It has left the highway shut down for at least six hours, with traffic still backed up at 7pm, as authorities cleared the scene.

A 600m exclusion zone has been declared around the crash site, with a potentially explosive cargo involved in the crash.

The driver is uninjured.

BREAKING 1PM: THE Leichardt Hwy, 20km north of Banana, is closed after road train trailers came off a truck.

All emergency services are on their way.

The road is expected to be closed for a number of hours.

No detours are in place yet.
