Rockhampton builder hopes more business confidence in 2016

ROCKHAMPTON'S Ben Hooper has been in the building industry since he was 17 years old and has seen many changes throughout his career.

But the local owner of Hooper Constructions has never seen the industry suffer as much as it has in recent times.

Although Ben, 41, said his company had kept a steady stream of work over the last two years but he could see the industry getting tougher in the CQ region.

"Enquiry rates have dropped in recent months which are unusual as they normally increase towards Christmas time," he said.

"There's not a lot of confidence since the mining industry decreased and as a result the residential market is getting a lot more competitive. We're pretty steady as I've just started one of the more expensive and high market jobs we've had recently over northside so there's a few people in the high end market who are willing to spend and build high quality homes.

"We just need to see some confidence in the region and confidence in 2016. We're all hoping 2016 brings more consistency to the industry."
