Local event raises funds for cancer with Rio support

THIS Saturday night locals could have the chance to meet Rio gold medallist and Women's Sevens World Player of the Year recipient Charlotte Caslick while sipping cocktails and raising funds for charity.

The annual Rockhampton Amateurs Racing Club fundraising event for cancer, Cocktails and Canapes, is on this Saturday night at the Giddy Goat from 6pm. It's one of three annual fundraising events the local club hosts to raise money for the Cancer Council Queensland.

Event organiser Jonathon Offord said this was the third year for the Cocktails and Canapes.

"A few of the committee members both past and present have been affected by cancer and as a result we decided to use these events to raise money for the Cancer Council Queensland,” he said.

"Over all three events we have been able to donate annually a cash donation of $10,000. Last year we had about 90 people attend the event but this year we have sold over the 100 mark already and we are anticipating ticket sales to today and tomorrow.”

One of the highlights of the night will be the special guest appearance of Charlotte Caslick.

"We are absolutely pumped to have Charlotte attend our event this year,” Jonathon said.

"We have been very lucky to have fantastic guests over the last two years in Laura Geitz and Stephanie Rice but when the women's rugby team won gold in Rio I sent an email straight away to Charlotte's agent and we were lucky enough to get her support. The timing has worked out really well with Charlotte being voted Women's Sevens World Player of the year just this week.

"To think she is attending large events in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne at present, it really is a great score to have her attend our local club event.”
