Local label's GKI launch
IT WAS a boys fishing trip on the Great Barrier Reef that saw Nathan Milner create his own clothing label.
And now, six months later, the local father of two is ready to officially launch the label Slippery Sailor Co at the Great Keppel Island launch party this weekend.
Slippery Sailor Co is a local clothing label that was created from Nathan's passion for being out on the water.
Nathan, 29, said he thought of the idea when he was on a boys fishing trip earlier in the year.
"I really wanted it to be a local label here in CQ,” he said.
"Some mates and I did 10 days at the Great Barrier Reef and there was talk about getting shirts made just for the trip but I went one step further and I just thought to myself it would be good to create a local label that everyone can wear and it just went from there.
"I spend a lot of time on the water fishing, spear fishing and boating so I wanted to build a brand around that. The brand really can be a lot of things at the end of the day but it's all about just loving the ocean and enjoying the ocean. The apparel is unisex as well so it can be for everyone.
"The support in the local area has been great and hopefully there's bigger and better things to come.”
The official launch of the brand is this Saturday at Great Keppel Island Hideaway where a number of activities will be held throughout the day.
"I wanted to bring everyone together to celebrate the launch of the brand and what better way to do that then on GKI,” he said.
"There'll be cast net throwing event, lure throwing event and crab tying event plus we've got a few local bands playing live there. We're raising funds also for the rescue helicopter.
"For me Slippery Sailor Co was never about making money and it still isn't. I have a full time job as a sale manager but I really wanted to do it and I'm excited to see where it goes.”
The Slippery Sailor Co website will be launch next week with apparel available for purchase at Barra Jacks Rockhampton and The Secret Spot Yeppoon.
