What could go wrong went wrong on Rocky MPs road trip

IT TOOK Bill Byrne almost seven hours to drive from Marmor to Rockhampton on Monday.

That's because the Member for Rockhampton had accidentally started a fire that went wild across a 100-250m area of fuel-loaded grass plain on the side of the Bruce Hwy.

The drama began about 2.30pm when the trailer he was towing behind his ute snapped away from the tow bar.

But then things started heating up.

After travelling for some distance along the roadside, Mr Byrne didn't realise the trailer was grinding the road surface and sending sparks into a nearby parched paddock.

When a fire erupted, all that Mr Byrne could think about was getting his beloved ute out of the firing line.

The shadow spokesman for emergency services and rural firies also managed to keep the rowing boats away from the flames as he tried to fight the blaze.

The real hero of the afternoon, according to Mr Byrne, was a man named Clark McGhie.

He and his family pulled over to help Mr Byrne battle the fire, while other motorists drove by.

Nearby rural residents also came to the rescue until rural fire crews arrived to bring the blaze under control.
