SWEET ANNIVERSARY: Love still strong after 70 years
EVELYN and Sid Courtney celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary with friends and family on the weekend in Yeppoon.
Evelyn can still remember the very first time she saw Sid and fell in love.
"My mother found out a lady from church had fallen and broken her arm so she sent me to help her," she said.
"She lived alongside a creek (salt water) where three brothers were scraping and painting their fishing boat.
"Her husband gave me his binoculars to look at the men at the boat.
"That's when I first saw Sid and we met later when the lady I was helping invited him to come for a meal that night.
"Well, we started going out together from then and that was in April of 1945.
"We got engaged in May and we were married on November 28 that same year.
"We have two daughters, Barbara and Dawn, and a son Daniel, six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
"The people who knew about our marriage coming up started a story because I was only 17 and a half years old and my fiancée was 21.
"As I told my friend, it took 19 months for our first child, but the other two were only nine months each.
"So that put an end to the wagging tongues.
"We've had our ups and downs like most people but after 70 years together we still love and respect each other."
