Luxembourg police bust Ipswich child porn addict

A MAN who had more than 2000 child porn images and nearly 150 child porn videos will spend just three months in jail.

Paul Asford, 31, pleaded guilty at the Ipswich District Court to possessing child exploitation material and using the internet to access child exploitation material.

The Australian Federal Police were contacted by police in Luxembourg after the IP address of Ashford's Ipswich house was found to have accessed a Luxembourg based child pornography website.

Police raided Ashford's house, where he directed them to a computer.

On the computer, police found 2634 child exploitation images and 142 videos.

They were mixed among around 40,000 images of legal pornography.

The court heard Ashford was a loner who had turned to pornography after moving to Queensland, where he knew no one, for work.

He voluntarily accompanied police to the station where he made no admissions and answered almost all questions with "no comment" or "not relevant".

The Crown prosecutor described some of the images as "grossly depraved" although Judge Sarah Bradley said according to the tendered list of the pornography, the vast majority was at the lowest end of child exploitation material.

Defence lawyer Steve Kissick said Ashford has an "enormous appetite for adult pornography" and was accessing it heavily every day.

He stressed that Ashford was not charged with purchasing the images or spreading them.

Judge Bradley said without the support of people like Ashford, the illegal child pornography industry would cease.

"It is an insidious and sinister industry," she said.

"It relies on people like you to access these images to continue.

"The description (of pornography) given … shows children were not only exploited but cruelly and humiliatingly used.

"You had few friends or relationships and you've turned to pornography. That's not unusual in itself. But you've taken it too far."

For using the internet to access child exploitation material Ashford was sentenced to 12 months prison, with a parole release date in three months.

For possessing child pornography, he was sentenced to 18 months prison, suspended after three months for the next three years.
