Lyon loss means end of Europa League for Everton

IT WAS a mixed night for English teams in the Europa League with Everton bundled out and Arsenal sealing a place in the last-32 knockout stages.

Caretaker manager David Unsworth was hoping for some joy for Everton after losing his first two games in charge but a 3-0 defeat in Lyon coupled with Atalanta's 1-1 draw against Apollon Limassol means the Toffees cannot progress from the group stage with two matches remaining.

Former Chelsea player Bertrand Traore opened the scoring in the 68th minute before substitute Houssem Aouar added a second 14 minutes later.

The visitors were reduced to 10 men after Morgan Schneiderlin received a second yellow and former Manchester United winger Memphis Depay sealed the win with a close-range header.

Arsenal reached the knockout stages despite a goalless draw against Red Star Belgrade at the Emirates.

The game's best chance fell to midfielder Jack Wilshere, but his shot from close range was cleared off the line.

Richmond Boakye had the best opportunities for the Serbian side could not hit the target with efforts in each half.

Arsenal top Group H with 10 points from four games and Cologne's 5-2 win over BATE Borisov in the group's other game allowed them to progress.
