Lyons out of form in barrels

THERE were some brilliant times recorded but the in-form Jill Lyons will not be overly pleased with her finish in the ladies barrel race.

Recently Lyons, and her horse Pink, have been running hot at the Great Western's Nissan Navara Arena, hardly making the small circuit look a challenge.

While the experienced Lyons was still quick, other competitors in the event shifted up a gear and recorded faster times.

Lyons led the second night scores for a long time after rounding the three barrels, without penalty, in 13.132 seconds.

While that is a decent time it is one she could have improved upon as her approach to the second barrel was a little wide and probably cost her a fraction of a second.

No such problem for Alleisha Priddle and PJ Hanrahan as they flew around the circuit in under 13 seconds.

Priddle's performance on the second night was outstanding and she fired a warning shot for 2012, letting fellow cowgirls know she is back in business and ready to collect a few wins at the Great Western once again like she was doing a few years ago.

In past year's Priddle set the benchmark for the event at the tight Nissan Navara Arena but more recently has been slightly off the pace.

However, the two-night event was always going to provide the most consistent of the riders with the large payout cheque and that cowgirl was Hanrahan.

On Friday night she won the Barrel Race while on the second night she was 0.01 seconds slower than Priddle to finish second.

For her efforts a beaming Hanrahan was presented with her winner's cheque and received a warm applause from the appreciative Great Western crowd.

The closeness of the Barrel Race always provides excitement for spectators.

On Saturday the top four riders were separated by just 0.16 of a second.

Also the top four riders were the same on both nights with Chloe Roberts very close to a big win having claimed a second and third placing.

Steffi Roberts also put in a big challenge to finish third and fourth over the two nights.

Saturday:- 1) Alleisha Priddle, 2) PJ Hanrahan, 3) Chloe Roberts, 4) Steffi Roberts

Overall winner:- PJ Hanrahan
