Mackay woman to set sail from South Africa

MACKAY sailor Nicolette Horak is taking part on the South African team's yacht, IchorCoal.

Horak set sail from Cape Town in South Africa on October 31, she is currently sailing to Albany in Western Australia.

From there she will sail to Sydney, and then compete in the Sydney to Hobart, a bucket list race for her.

After completing that leg of the journey, Horak will sail to Airlie Beach.

Meanwhile Whitsunday Regional Council will sponsor the welcome and farewell events for the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race, which is scheduled to arrive at Abell Point Marina January 13, 2016.

Mayor Jennifer Whitney said the events will be coordinated by the Whitsunday Coast Chamber of Commerce and include a Family Open Day carnival.

"The Whitsunday Islands are a world-renowned sailing destination and it's terrific that we have been listed alongside places such as Rio de Janeiro, New York and Sydney on the fleet's racing  itinerary," Mayor Whitney said.

"The race is expected to be a real drawcard for the local tourism industry in terms of attracting visitors to the region, along with the families of the boat crews and a strong media contingent covering the event," she said.

"Abell Point Marina will be a change-over port for the race, with approximately half of the 690- strong crew to be replaced by fresh crew at Airlie Beach."

The race was launched from London's St Katherine Docks in late August, with the fleet to visit destinations including Rio de Janeiro, Qingdao, Seattle, Panama and New York before finishing back in London next year.
