Madden avoids ethics probe over media leak

IPSWICH West MP Jim Madden has escaped further punishment for his role in leaking confidential ethics committee information.

Ethics committee members are prohibited from revealing information about committee deliberations.

Mr Madden quit the powerful parliamentary committee last week and apologised for divulging information to the Queensland Times.

The damaging leak surrounded the timing of a damning ethics committee report into former police minister Jo-Ann Miller.

The Queensland Times published the exclusive story last week.

Opposition Leader Lawrence Springborg wrote to Speaker Peter Wellington on December 1 urging him to refer Mr Madden to the ethics committee for investigation.

Mr Wellington referred the complaint to the ethics committee on December 2 for their consideration.

Ethics committee acting-chair Di Farmer said that following Mr Madden's disclosure no further action would be taken in the future.

She asked Mr Wellington to advise the parliament of the committee's determination as soon as possible.

"The committee has resolved that the matter raised by the Leader of the Opposition has been effectively dealt with," she said.

"The committee applauds Mr Madden for taking responsibility for his error and his prompt and appropriate action in the interests of maintaining the integrity and standards expected of members who serve on the ethics committee."
