Magistrate to decide if pregnant robbery case heard

HERVEY Bay magistrate Graeme Tatnell will decide whether there is enough evidence to proceed with a case against a 19-year-old woman on a charge of robbery with actual violence.

Nadine Stevie Wilkinson, who is heavily pregnant, appeared before Hervey Bay Magistrate this week for a committal hearing to determine if there was enough evidence for a jury to convict.

The charge related to the robbery of Torquay's Cypress Street Store last year.

Several witnesses appeared, including the investigating police officer and a 15-year-old girl who saw a woman in a car leaving the scene of the robbery.

Defence barrister David Murray appeared on Wilkinson's behalf.

Detective Christopher Wheeler was cross-examined by Mr Murray, who contested the colour of the car witnesses had seen in comparison to the colour of his client's car.

Witnesses testified to seeing a teal-coloured car. Mr Murray argued that his client's car was blue.

A 15-year-old female witness also testified and said she did not believe the photos of Wilkinson's car matched the car she had seen after the robbery.

It was also revealed the girl had not picked Wilkinson from a photo board she was shown by police after the incident.

Mr Murray also questioned both Det Wheeler and the 15-year-old witness about the clothing the defendant was wearing and clothing the police later seized at her home.

Det Wheeler said he had seen the word Nirvana on the suspect's hoodie when he watched CCTV footage showing the robbery and the word was also on a hoodie later found at Wilkinson's home.

But the 15-year-old witness did not believe the clothing matched what she had seen.

A decision will be handed down on July 6.
