Major shopping centre for Rocky

A FORMER caravan park near the Parkhurst Tavern at Parkhurst is to house a major shopping centre.

Councillors have approved a $20 million development that will include a supermarket, drive-through restaurant, service station and a medical centre.

The President Property Group received planning consent for a shopping outlet on the site in 2007, but re-applied with an expanded proposal that was unanimously supported by the Rockhampton Regional Council.

The revised plan is for a development of 8290sq m – 2500sq m bigger than before.

There will be parking for 443 vehicles, with access off Yaamba Rd (the Bruce Hwy).

Councillors were told the centre would be 7km from the nearest commercial activity, in Glenmore, and with new housing developments planned for Parkhurst it would be ideally situated to meet increasing demand.

In addition to a 4000sq m supermarket there would be a range of speciality shops, including a butcher, video store and deli as well as a surgery for doctors and a pharmacy.

Parkhurst is expected to grow significantly in the next 10 years.
