Making merry at mudsportz meet

MUD RACING: Rockhampton's Robyn Baker piloted her hot pink Hilux named Dolly to two top-three placings in the CQ Mudsportz Twin Track Meet at the weekend.

The weather was red hot and so was racing at the Kabra track on Saturday. The meet attracted a field of 50 cars, with drivers travelling from Jericho, Gladstone, Sarina and Mackay to take on the locals.

Baker left a number of rivals in her muddy wake as she raced to third in both the Top Gun Drags and the Top Gun Twin Track.

"It was really good and there was a huge turnout. The track was the best it's been and the racing was great,” the 27-year-old said.

"I was really happy with my third in the drags because my motor is one of the smaller ones so it was good to beat some of the more powerful cars.”

Baker wasn't the only local to score success.

Troy Langley in What Tha! took the honours in the Standard Drags and was third in Standard Twin Track and Cody Dickenson in Tilly was third in the Junior Twin Track.

Baker said it was great to fly the flag for the female drivers in a male-dominated field. She said of the 50 cars there, only five were driven by women.

The petite hairdresser, who has been mud racing since she was 15, relishes the chance to take on the boys.

"It's just something different and I really love it,” she said.

"The guys like to give us girls a bit of cheek so it's always nice to beat them.”

Baker says she got her first taste for the sport when her brother Timothy and dad Graham built a car and let her race it.

She felt right at home behind the wheel and she hasn't looked back.

"That was it. I just wanted to race,” she said.

"The key is just to have fun and not take it too seriously. Just keep it simple and enjoy it.”
