The NRL's head of football Todd Greenberg said the Australian team's main target was to win the 2017 Rugby League World Cup.

Meninga, who led the Maroons to nine Origin series wins against New South Wales in his 10 years in charge, said it had always been a personal ambition to coach the Kangaroos.

"For the players, it is the ultimate privilege to the wear the colours of your country, and it is something that they all aspire to," he said.

"For me, it's always been something I've wanted to do. It is truly an honour to be in this position, as the new coach of the Kangaroos."

The Queensland Rugby League is in the process of selecting Meninga's replacement with Broncos assistant Kevin Walters one of the main contenders.
