Malfunction affects Westpac customers

1.15pm: WESTPAC customers should be able to access their online banking accounts within the next few hours after a malfunctioning air conditioner triggered a shut down of ATMs, eftpos machines and online banking nationwide.

Customers only access to their bank accounts was directly through branches.

A Westpac spokesman said ATMs and eftpos machines were again working and they were focussing their efforts on getting online banking back up.

“We are progressively rolling it in this afternoon,” he said.

“But it might get a bit patchy for the next couple of hours.”

Westpac announced in a statement the air conditioning problem at one of the data centres caused the shut down.

Large computer systems rely on the cooling of air-conditioners to keep them running.
