Man airlifted to Brisbane after spearfishing accident

UPDATE 2PM: A 22-year-old Yeppoon man was in a boat just off Great Keppel Island when a loaded spear gun resting against the vessel unexpectedly released striking him in the chest.

The spear entered the man's chest just under his left arm, narrowly missing his vital organs.

The end was visible, but not protruding under his right arm. 

A medical team from the RACQ Capricorn Helicopter Rescue Service assessed and treated the patient on scene.

He was transported to Rockhampton Hospital and then transferred to Brisbane.

He was in a critical yet stable condition.

8.50AM: A MAN has been airlifted to Brisbane Hospital after a spearfishing accident left him with critical injuries.

Inspector Virginia Nelson from Rockhampton Police said it appeared he accidently discharged the gun and speared himself while fishing near Great Keppel Island last night.

Fortunately he missed all his vital organs.

Police spoke to the man in hospital and interviewed all witnesses.
