Wanted man arrested and detained
A MAN has been arrested after a state-wide search for a motor vehicle involved in the attempted abduction of a woman in North Rockhampton last month.
The 24-year-old was refused bail when he faced a Mackay court yesterday charged with attempting to abduct an 18-year-old woman off Farm Street.
The man, arrested by Mackay detectives, can not be identified by law at this stage because he was also charged with indecently dealing with a child in an unrelated case.
It is believed number plate details remembered by the victim of the attempted abduction in Rockhampton on December 27 led to the arrest.
The 18-year-old woman was walking along Farm Street when a man driving a white Falcon station wagon pulled up beside her and asked if she wanted a lift.
She ignored him and kept walking.
Police said moments later the man grabbed her by the wrist and tried pulling her into the car.
The woman managed to break free and ran away during the frightening attack.
After the woman escaped, she ran to a nearby residence where she was originally heading, Senior Sergeant Neill Smith of Rockhampton police said.
The same man was wanted for questioning over an unrelated incident last year in which he allegedly approached a woman on a beach, tried to kiss her and asked her for sex.
In court yesterday, the man, 24, was not required to enter pleas to attempted kidnapping, assault causing bodily harm, common assault and indecently treating a child.
An application for bail was refused. Magistrate Damien Dwyer said the man was an unacceptable risk of committing more offences.
He was remanded in custody until a date in March.
