Man charged in wake of bashing

POLICE have charged a Blackwater man with the serious assault of a work colleague who remains in a Brisbane hospital on life support.

In the Blackwater Magistrates Court last Thursday, the 19-year-old was bailed to reappear in January on a count of assault occasioning grievous bodily harm.

He faces a maximum of 14 years jail.

Doctors are set to bring the victim out of an induced coma in the intensive care unit of the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital where he has been since being bashed and found lying in a pool of blood in Arthur Street on Friday, December 4.

Blackwater officer-in-charge Sergeant Paul Griffiths said police were concerned with the recent increase in assaults in the township.

“In December alone, there have been six reported assaults of a serious nature,” he said.

“People need to understand this is a reality: one punch can kill.”
