Man charged over fishing gear

DOES any of this fishing gear belong to you?

Fishing rods, spears, reels, a Mercury outboard motor, GPS system, spotlights, binoculars, pumps, flippers, nets and tools were seized from a caravan in Yeppoon on Monday.

Police searched a 37-year-old man’s home at 9.30am and found the suspected stolen property and hope to give it back to its owners.

They believe the property was stolen from boats in Ross Creek, Yeppoon, over the past 10 months, and possibly from break-ins of homes and vehicles.

Fishing on the bank of the creek yesterday, Keppel Sands resident Jacinta Pearson said she couldn’t believe someone would steal fishing gear.

“It’s not right,” she said. “They could have gone after more expensive stuff, but then again, it’s not cheap to replace the gear.”

Police are hoping to return the stolen goods and want anyone who recognises their gear from this photograph (right) to contact them on 4939 0000.

The man was arrested and charged with break and entry and possession of tainted property and will appear in the Yeppoon Magistrates Court on May 6.
