Man to face trial after 18-month-old Moranbah boy dies
11.40am: A MAN appeared in the Mackay Magistrates Court on a murder charge over the death of a toddler.
Matthew James Ireland was initially charged with torture and grievous bodily harm after an 18-month-old boy was rushed to Townsville Hospital on Wednesday in a critical condition.
The charge was upgraded to murder after it was confirmed late yesterday the child had died.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Sabine Scott said no evidence was being offered in relation to the torture and grievous bodily hard charges.
The matter was adjourned to early June for committal mention.
He has been remanded in custody.
5am: POLICE have confirmed a toddler has died after being critically injured by a 29-year-old man, who is facing Mackay court today.
Matthew James Ireland had been originally charged with one count each of torture and grievous bodily harm after police were called to Moranbah Hospital on Wednesday morning, where the child was bought in with serious injuries.
The Townsville man did not appear in court yesterday where the case was mentioned. His legal representatives did not apply for bail and Ireland was remanded in custody.
The man is not believed to be the father of the child.
The boy was transported to Townsville Hospital where he died last night.
