Man in court over New Year's assault

GEORGE Kirk allegedly strangled a man until he was unconscious and then after he'd dropped to the floor kicked him three times to the head, a Rockhampton court heard yesterday.

Kirk, 27, was refused bail in the Rockhampton Magistrates Court.

He is charged with one count of assault occasioning bodily harm after allegedly going to the Barney Point, Gladstone, home of the 28-year-old victim and attacking him on New Year's Day between 12.30pm and 1pm.

Defence solicitor, Lance Rundle, representing Kirk at the bail application in which the defendant appeared via telephone from the Gladstone watch-house, said the alleged assault occurred after an earlier incident in which the man attacked Kirk and his girlfriend.

Magistrate Annette Hennessy refused bail.

He will appear in the Gladstone Magistrates Court on Tuesday, January 10.
