Man critical after head-on crash

A MAN is critically ill in Rockhampton Hospital this morning after two cars crashed head-on on Lakes Creek Road just before dawn.

The 30-year-old was one of two people who were cut from the wreckage by fire crews working alongside paramedics in an extensive rescue operation which caused severe disruption to rush-hour traffic.

A 35-year-old woman who suffered spinal injuries was described by an emergency services spokesman as in a serious condition, as was a 50-year-old woman who suffered a dislocated shoulder and injuries to her knee and ankle. They are also being treated in Rockhampton Hospital.

Traffic was blocked for at least three hours during the rescue and clean-up operation.

The spokesman said that although initial reports suggested that one of the vehicles was on fire after the crash there had been no need to extinguish any flames.
