Man dies in Rocky jail fight
AN investigation will continue today into the suspicious death of a prisoner at the Capricornia Correctional Centre, north of Rockhampton, yesterday.
Prison officers who witnessed a fight between two inmates were offered counselling after one of the men involved in the altercation died.
The 30-year-old Gladstone man was taken to the medical centre at the prison shortly after 9am and died of head injuries before an ambulance could take him to Rockhampton Hospital.
A crime scene has been set up and prisoners were yesterday isolated in their cells.
Officers from the State Crime Operations squad were flown up from Brisbane yesterday to assist Rockhampton CIB with the investigation.
Correctional centre officers and inmates will be interviewed as part of the investigation.
Late yesterday no charges had been laid against the prisoner involved in the fight.
The deceased man had only arrived at the correctional centre last month after being sent to jail for six months on a breaking-and-entering charge.
The family of the dead prisoner were being contacted yesterday by police and the man’s name was not released.
Police will continue to interview people at the prison and collect evidence today.
This incident was not the first time detectives have investigated a suspicious death at the Capricornia Correctional Centre.
In 1999 inmate Robert James Buckley was killed by three prisoners and hung in the shower block of the old jail.
Three prisoners were found guilty in Rockhampton Supreme Court this year of the 10-year-old murder and each received the mandatory life sentence.
All three have lodged appeals against their convictions, which are still being processed.
