$500 fine for slapping stepson across the face

A MOUNT Morgan man was yesterday fined $500 for slapping his stepson across the face when he wouldn't go to bed.

The mother of the 11-year-old boy told him to go to bed at 9pm on April 27.

The boy refused and gave his mum “a bit of lip”.

The stepdad, who his lawyer said had been a father figure for a few years, told the boy to go to bed.

The child replied: “You can go and get (expletive).”

The stepdad “became aggressive” and slapped the boy across the face with an open hand.

When the boy arrived at school the next morning a teacher asked what had happened.

As a result police interviewed the boy and then went to speak with his stepdad.

The stepdad admitted to officers “to giving him a backhander because he was playing up”.

Yesterday the stepfather pleaded guilty in Rockhampton Magistrates Court to one count of common assault. Defence lawyer Anthony DeFraine showed the court two photos of the boy's injuries.

Mr DeFraine said there was a slight red mark on the boy's cheek.

The stepfather, who has no history of anything of this nature, was fined and had a conviction recorded.
