Man found with taser breaks into home to steal grog

A MAN who was found with a taser disguised as an iPhone and broke into a home to steal alcohol has been jailed for 18 months.

Joseph Robert William Ward, 23, pleaded guilty in Maryborough Magistrates Court yesterday to 12 charges including possessing a weapon, burglary, stealing and other drug charges.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Kathryn Stagoll said Ward had committed a number of offences between July 11 and October 15.

She said Ward stole a mobile phone from a car at Matilda service station on Ferry St while the owner was inflating the tyres on a boat trailer about 5.40am on July 24.

"He did say he was 'charged' that night didn't remember doing it," she said.

Sgt Stagoll said on September 13 police saw Ward acting suspiciously near at pay phone at Bay Plaza in Pialba.

She said when police approached he dropped what appeared to be a table leg.

When police searched Ward, they found him in possession of a knife and the taser which was designed to look like an iPhone.

"He referred to it as back-up," she said.

Sgt Stagoll said on October 15 Ward walked through an unlocked wooden gate, and under a house and removed two bottles of alcohol and some coke from a fridge in Hervey Bay.

Defence lawyer Travis George said Ward had an ongoing drug problem which could be seen by the fact all offences had occurred while he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

He said police had not tested whether the taser worked and was doubtful as it had been purchased overseas.

"Whether they actually work and what they are capable of doing I am not sure of," he said.

Magistrate John Smith said being affected by drugs was no excuse.

"In my view it is more serious when an offence of breaking into homes (is committed) while on drugs," he said.

Mr Smith sentenced Ward to a head sentence of 18 months with a parole release date of April 15.
