1PM: A man has been airlifted to the PA Hospital with serious injuries following an accident on the Cunningham Hwy.

Police say the man had been called out to replace a flat tyre on a truck on the west-bound lanes of the highway at Yamanto about 11.45am, when he fell backwards and was hit by a passing truck.

An ambulance spokeswoman says the Rescue 500 chopper was called to airlift the man, who is suffering serious bruising to his chest.

The man's condition is now described as stable.

Police have closed a large section of the highway, with traffic diverted around the scene of the incident.

The forensic crash unit will investigate and the highway is expected to remain closed for several hours.

EARLIER: There are reports of a pedestrian hit by a truck on the Cunningham Hwy at Yamanto.

The full extent of the man's injuries are unknown, but an initial report to police suggested he was left lying prone on the roadway.

An ambulance spokeswoman says the man had pulled over to the side of the road to change a tyre when he was struck.

He has sustained serious chest injuries.

The Rescue 500 emergency chopper was nearby at the time and has been called to airlift the man to hospital.

Police are organising traffic diversions around the scene of the accident to allow room for the chopper to land.

More to come.
