Man in stolen vehicle

MACKAY: A WOMAN'S house was burgled while she was asleep and she woke up at 9.30pm to the sound of her car being driven out of the driveway. William John Daniel, a 19-year-old concreter, was not the intruder, but he a passenger in the car when it was stopped later on.

Daniel pleaded guilty in the Mackay Magistrates Court on Friday to unlawfully using a vehicle and breaching probation, both on August 20.

Someone broke into the woman’s house and found her handbag and car keys and took them outside and stole her car, prosecutor Constable Karine Evans said.

Police were notified and the car was located about one hour later in East Mackay. Daniel was a front-seat passenger and he fled on foot as police approached. He said he was picked up by two other people in the car and they took him for a drive.

Daniel was on parole at the time and was also on a suspended sentence for an unrelated assault offence.

Magistrate Damien Dwyer said he will sentence Daniel tomorrow.
