Man kicked in the head in late night punch up

"IF IT doesn't stop, someone will die over one stupid punch."

That was the message from Royal Hotel manager Stacey Lowe after a man was punched and then kicked while on the ground in Mary St in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Ms Lowe is urging people to think twice before resorting to violence while out in Gympie at night.

She said she felt things brewing about 1am on Saturday and decided to shut the Royal Hotel early.

"When there's more activity out on the street with young males congregating than inside the pubs you know it's on," Ms Lowe said.

She had received advice, earlier in the night, that a fellow hotel manager had kicked some trouble makers out of his hotel after a scuffle.

The trouble then moved to Mary St.

At about 1.30am a man was punched in the head and knocked to the ground.

He was then kicked in the head and blacked out.

Ms Lowe was alerted to the altercation when she saw two men run past her establishment.

Gympie police and ambulance officers arrived at the scene at 1.35am.

Police questioned witnesses while the ambulance treated the victim.

"Thankfully he was alright," Ms Lowe said.

But Ms Lowe said it was only matter of time before someone was killed in Mary St if the violence continues.

Gympie police said they couldn't continue to investigate the incident because the victim refused to file a complaint against the offenders.

Police are urging victims of violence to report the matter to authorities.

If you see someone being attacked please call 000 or report any non-urgent crime to Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.
