WATCH: Engaged and married on the same day

EXPECTING to meet her partner for breakfast on their 10 year anniversary together, Rockhampton business owner Amelia Williams had no idea that by the end of the day she would be Mrs Amelia Holgate.

Walking into a holiday apartment in Yeppoon expecting to see her boyfriend, she instead found her best friend and her mother waiting for her.

Suspecting that something was going on but not sure what, things started to fall into place when a video starting playing - with boyfriend Ben as the star.

Seeing Ben Holgate, also a business owner from Rockhampton, sitting at a piano, singing a reworked version of Let It Be, Amelia said she was in shock and disbelief for most of the four-minute video.

"I knew instantly that I'd been stitched up I just didn't know what for," she said.

"As I was watching the video it just unfolded under my eyes.

"I didn't click on straight away when he was at the piano, I started to realise when him and his brother were putting their suits on because they were wearing matching suits.

"When he said the line 'Marry Me', I was like 'right, okay this is a proposal'."

Realising that not only was Ben proposing, but was also asking her to marry him that day, Amelia was ready to say yes.

Amelia, pictured here with Ben and her 12 year old son Corbin, said she was surprised and excited to see that Ben had arranged for her brothers to be her bridesmaids.

"At the end when he said 'See you at the alter at 4' I was like '4? I'm ready to go now'," she said.

Waiting in the wings following the video was a photographer and videographer to capture the moment as well as a make-up artist, hair dresser and a rack of dresses for Amelia to choose her perfect wedding dress.

For Ben, the process wasn't so fast.

Saying he had thought of the idea about three years ago, it took him 12 months to work out the logistics of how he would pull it off.

He didn't approach a wedding planner until the start of this year when he had gathered enough information to kick planning into full gear.

He said that for the most part, planning a surprise engagement and wedding was an enjoyable experience, aside from one mishap a week out from the wedding.

"We were working with a bridal shop in Rocky and it was one of those things they were on board the whole way along and then at the eleventh hour, I think we were seven days out from the wedding, they pulled out and we were left scrambling for a dress," he said.

"We just went into problem solving mode, thinking about what we could do and how we could solve it in such a short amount of time."

While he was sure Amelia wanted to get married, Ben said he was still nervous about the possibility the day wouldn't go as he had planned.

"What I was most nervous about was the circumstances in which I was making it happen," he said.

"Would she feel like I had robbed her of her opportunity to plan her wedding? Would she feel like she had missed out on the chance to choose her own bridesmaids? What if I got some of the decisions wrong?

"I don't think it was nervousness so much around her saying yes, but I hadn't ruled out the possibility that she might say 'No, not like this'.

The nerves disappeared for both Amelia and Ben when the saw each other for the first time that day, waiting at opposite ends of the aisle.

"I was so happy to see him," Amelia said.

"My dad had to hold me back because I just wanted to run down the aisle, give Ben a kiss and run back to dad and then start the ceremony, but dad had to hold me back and keep me steady."

For Ben, it was his favourite moment from the day.

"If you know Amelia, she looks gorgeous every day regardless, but it was just so nice to see her so happy. She just radiated, she was just so beautiful."
