Man rescued after boat fire

THE RACQ Capricorn Rescue Helicopter retrieved a man from Townshend Island, about 109km north of Rockhampton, yesterday.

The cockpit of the man’s vessel caught fire and he had to abandon ship. The 66-year-old had just enough time to grab emergency gear and get in his dinghy.

He suffered an injury to his lower leg, as well as multiple cuts and abrasions and was flown to Rockhampton for further treatment.

The man had set off his distress beacon and the rescue crew found him on the rocky shore of the island.
