Rocky man allegedly stomped on police officer's toe in theft

A MEMBER of the public took matters into his own hands when he saw a man fleeing the Rockhampton City Centre Plaza on Wednesday.

Police allege Brian James Sue entered a bottleshop at the shopping centre wearing a white plastic mask at 3.15pm.

The 23-year-old appeared in the Rockhampton Magistrates Court yesterday charged with obstructing police, serious assault and possessing a utensil.

Police prosecuor Sergeant Joe Aboud said Sue stole a $250 bottle of Jim Bean from the centre.

It was alleged a member of the public restrained Sue as he left the centre, before security guards and an off-duty police officer intervened.

Sgt Aboud said a struggle ensued, during which Sue stomped on the police officer's foot, fracturing his toe.

Solicitor Shayne Studdert applied for bail for Sue who did not enter a plea.

Sgt Aboud said the defendant was at risk of failing to appear, of re-offending and endangering the public.

Bail was refused and the matter adjourned to December 17.
